Technical Skills Requirements for Successful Online Learning

Students enrolling in online courses at Superior University are expected to possess the minimum technical skills necessary to successfully complete course activities. Online learning requires students to work independently using digital tools and platforms.

Please note that online instructors are not responsible for teaching basic computer or technical skills as part of the course content. Students who do not meet the following requirements are strongly encouraged to complete a basic computer skills course before enrolling in an online class.

Computer Literacy Requirements

To succeed in an online learning environment, students must have a fundamental understanding of computer systems and internet usage. The required skills include, but are not limited to, the following:

Basic Computer Knowledge

    • Familiarity with common computer terminology such as browser, operating system, application, software, files, documents, and icons

    • Understanding of basic computer hardware and software components

Computer Operations

  • Ability to use a keyboard and mouse effectively

  • Managing files and folders, including saving, naming, copying, moving, backing up, renaming, deleting, and checking file properties

  • Installing software and maintaining system security, including antivirus and virus protection


Software Applications

  • Ability to use common productivity tools such as:

    • Microsoft Word

    • PowerPoint

    • Excel

    • Email applications

  • Skills in copying and pasting content, spell-checking, and saving files in different formats

  • Sending, receiving, and downloading file attachments

Internet and Online Communication Skills

  • Ability to connect to the internet and use web browsers effectively

  • Proficiency in online communication tools, including:

    • Email (creating, sending, receiving, replying, printing, and managing attachments)

    • Discussion boards (reading, posting, replying, and following discussion threads)

    • Chats and messaging platforms

Online Research and Accounts

  • Ability to conduct online research using search engines and digital library databases

  • Ability to create and manage online user accounts required for course access
